Sad Diabetes News

6/30/2010

The reason that this is so sad: Type 2 diabetes is a disease that can be avoided by most people who have it...with proper diet.

Now read this story from the Los Angeles Times.

For diabetes drug Avandia, bad news continues

The diabetes drug Avandia, once the world's top-selling diabetes medication, took two more hits Monday with one new study linking it to an increased risk of heart attacks and a separate study linking it to an increased risk of heart failure and stroke. The research comes only weeks before an upcoming federal hearing to reconsider its fate.

The drug, also known by its generic name, rosiglitazone, was approved in 1999 to help people with Type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar. At the time, it was considered a safer alternative than existing diabetes drugs used instead of insulin. Soon after approval, however, the drug was linked to an increased risk of heart failure and bone fractures; worries about the drug's safety increased in 2007 when a meta-analysis — a pooling of previous studies — concluded that the drug increased the risk of heart attack.

Colorado is the only state with an obesity rate of under 20%! Take a look at the latest obesity map. My state: Georgia is weighing in at a healthy 28% obesity rate. Of course, Mississippi leads the pack again at a whopping 34%!

You can check out your state here.

You Must Read the Nutrition Facts Label

One again, front of package marketing provides misleading information to the consumer. It states 60% less fat.

Here's the scoop:
  • We still think "low fat" means something. It does not.
  • The real problem is  this: If you read the label and ingredients, you learn that the product has trans fat. Trans fat is known to be an artery clogger and killer. It is being taken out of most products. However, it's still in this one.

My dear friend, just hop on over to Friendly's.

This one is a whopper. It comes in at 1,500 calories! I'm sure they will be happy to add an order of French fries and a milk shake too. If you do that, you just added 1,340 calories to the equation. If my math is correct, that's a total of 2,840 calories.

  2. I can't _____________.
These typically relate to a certain type of food or exercise.

Suggestion: Have an open mind and enjoy new foods. And if you are going to live a healthier lifestyle, you must exercise. Find one or more that you like. I enjoy running, biking, hiking, tennis, kayaking, and weight-training.

Let's Eat!

This little collage was from a recent cruise that I took. I was observing eating patterns of the peeps on the cruise. Oh yeah, the one on the upper right was taken at the Iowa State Fair - deep fried junk food.

One picture that I did not take ... a big guy with a plate full of bacon and other high calorie/fat items. He proceeded to shake salt all over his food. After a little shake of pepper, he did some more salt shaking. Wow!

I recommend that you become an observer too. It's a wonderful learning experience.

Reduced Fat Scam

6/17/2010

Have you ever ordered a food item because it was "low fat" or "reduced fat"? Hopefully, you won't be fooled again. This is one example of a reduced fat item at Dunkin Donuts.

Item/Calories
Blueberry Muffin - 510
Reduced Fat Blueberry Muffin - 450

There's only a 60 calorie difference between the two items. And, both have an enormous amount of calories. You want to walk that muffin off? Plan on walking for about 90-minutes. Maybe that's why DD's slogan is America Runs on Dunkin.

Here's DD's nutrition facts.

For Americans today, healthy eating is like swimming upstream. It's not that you can't do it, it's just it's so hard. - Margo Wootan

Unfortunately, Ms. Wootan is correct. However, with some motivation and determination, healthy eating can be done. I do it and so do millions of people. It takes a little bit of knowledge and it isn't really that hard. As Dr. David Katz states so eloquently, "We're like polar bears in the Sahara Desert."

We were never meant to be in this environment, but we are.
