Jack LaLanne's 10 Point Plan

9/30/2010

Jack LaLanne just turned 96! He's one of my lifestyle heroes. His 10 point plan is as valid today as it was in the 50s. Way to go Jack!

Item #5 will get a grimace from the ladies. Keep in mind, this is from the days of Leave it to Beaver, Donna Reed, Father Knows Best, My Three Sons, Dick Van Dyke, and others.

Gimme Some Omega-3s ...

... But not in my junk food! If you want a good source of Omega 3s, try eating wild Salmon or take an Omega 3 supplement.

And by all means, ignore front of package labels. The above package is a great example of one to ignore.

Burger Time ... Not

Men's health reports on the worst burgers. Here are two of note:

1. How about 1,900 calories in one burger?
2. I hate trans fats. Here's a burger with 5 grams of trans fats.

To learn more about the trans fat lie, check this out.

It's Football Season . . .

So, it's  time to get ready for commercials that feature all the food items that make Americans fat.

Become an observer: watch the commercials. It will become obvious why 66% of Americans are overweight or obese.

It's the environment! No, not Al Gore's global warming environment, the U.S. toxic food environment.

Then for giggles, watch the commercials on the evening news. It's all the drugs we have to take because we have been eating all the food that is advertised during football games. If I was a conspiracy theorist, which I am not, I would believe that the food and pharmaceutical industries are in cahoots with one another.

Here are some more pictures of junk food that you will see during football season.

Reverse Heart Disease! Say What? Oh Yeah, Diabetes Too

While I am not on Drs. Esselstyn and Ornish's lifestyle plan, these gentlemen have reversed heart disease in their patients. President Clinton is on the plan now.

And, for a detailed analysis of Bill Clinton's health issues and the type of lifestyle change he's on, read this. If you have any type of heart disease, I highly recommend reading and watching.

Serving Size - Better Take a Calculator to the Grocery Store

9/22/2010

Picture
You might be wondering why you would need a calculator at the grocery store. To the left is exhibit A. Go figure:

- Four Muffins
- 180 Calories per serving
- 11 servings

Here's where the calculator is needed:
- 11/4 = 2.75 servings per muffin
- 2.75 x 180 = 495 calories per muffin

I believe it's safe to assume that you would eat an entire muffin. So, instead of consuming 180 calories, you will actually be chowing down on 495.

As an aside, the front label states: 0 trans fats. On the back label, it states: partially hydrogenated. That's a fancy way of saying trans fats. So, in each muffin there are, in fact,  trans fats. It also states on the back label: not a significant source of trans fats.

Considering that trans fat is a known killer, I always assume any amount of trans fat is significant. I also don't like being lied to!

Eat Less, Exercise More ... A Myth

9/20/2010

I was reading an article today and it stated: "four out of five consumers believe that their weight gain is a result of their own failure to eat less or exercise more."

Here's what I know and tell people in my seminars: "Eat more!"

The eat less, exercise more equation does not work for many reasons. First, you can eat more. No, not Snickers, Snackwells, and Skittles. However, if you are eating a healthy diet, you can and should eat a larger quantity of food and more frequently. I tell people: "If you are hungry, eat." Which of course, busts another myth ... eat any time of day. Yes, if you wake up at 3 in the morning and are hungry, by all means ... eat.

Most traditional diets fail because of the eat less part of the equation. If you are eating less, you will feel deprived and most likely are using willpower to eat less.
Deprivation and willpower will only take you so far. At some point, you will give up.

So, effective immediately, please ignore eat less, exercise more!

A McDonald's "Food" Demonstration

Today Brings Many Food/Health Videos . . .

First it was an anti-McDonald's commercial. Now, there's one that discusses the egg problem and factory farming.

As I tell people that attend my speeches: "Once you start investigating the American food system, you start digging a hole that gets very deep. One that you cannot get out of and it has tentacles that go in all directions."

The bottom line: The American food system is fascinating and frustrating.

A Wrong-Minded Anti-McDonald's Commercial

I am no fan of McDonald's or any fast food, however, to blame McDonald's for the health misfortunes that many people experience is a misdirection. We live in a toxic food environment. If you would like to explore it a little further, this video is worth watching.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

9/14/2010

A short and sweet article about the stuff. The Corn Refiners Association want to change the name from High Fructose Corn Syrup to Corn Sugar. The reason: many people believe that HFCS is poison.

It's actually no worse than cane sugar. However, we consume a lot of HFCS. The quantity that we consume is bad.

Check this example out.

Food Fight - A newly unified “food movement” is poised to revolutionize the American diet

9/13/2010

One of my "food heroes", Michael Pollan, penned this article. It's an interesting read, however, I'm not going to wait for big institutions to change.

I quote Michael Pollan frequently. He stated: "You can leave the Western diet without leaving civilization." So, I chose to do that as opposed to beating my head against a brick wall (fighting big institutions). That tends to hurt.

Here's a different and interesting perspective from an article titled: In Praise of Fast Food.

Here's How I Know the U.S. Food Environment Will Not Change

9/10/2010

Many well-meaning people spend a tremendous amount of time and energy trying to change the American food landscape. Yes, it is toxic and is the cause for many diseases.

However, I enjoy educating people so they can make a change in lifestyle ... if they desire.

Now, here's how I know the American food system will not change. This American food icon's stock is near an all-time high. That means business is good. And of course, people want to eat what it serves. Check it out here.

While I won't purchase its food, I wish I had purchased its stock when it was at 13 ... a few years back.
