The Problem with Most Diets

4/24/2012

Michael Gerson, a reporter with the Washington Post, wrote about his challenges with his boring diet. Unfortunately, most people who diet approach it in the wrong manner. Michael is one of them.

Here's an interview that he did with NPR about his weight-loss program. He's on a "low-carb" diet. There-in lies one of the problems. People think in terms of low-fat or low-carb. I do not recommend that as the criteria.

People also think, Eat Less, Exercise more is part of the plan. It's not. Eating less implies willpower and deprivation. While exercise is important, if you are eating fast-food or even at a fine restaurant, you cannot exercise off a 1,300-calorie meal. It would take about 2-hours. Good luck with that.

I can tell you this, if you are dieting and you still crave (and eat) French fries, mac and cheese, candy, junk food, soda, and other non-health promoting foods, you will fail. Frequently, I see people who have lost weight eating these types of foods.

If you are approaching a lifestyle change properly, you will identify food that tastes great and has health benefits. It's not that difficult.

However, most people are addicted to the American food system. You must be willing to leave the Western diet. It can be done. Millions have done it. However, many millions more have not.

The DASH Diet

1/11/2012

The PR firm for the book The Dash Diet sent me a copy to read. Evidently, it was ranked Best Overall Diet by U.S. News and World Report. It "turned me off" pretty quickly when I read the back cover. It stated: ... no forbidden foods.

I get it: No one wants to be told to lay off the Snickers, M&M's, ice cream, Cheetos, and assorted other junk food treats. However, there are many foods that should not cross your lips.

Here's the important concept. When you get to page 116 of the book, it states: Choosing food that tastes great and is satisfying can help us eat less, while enjoying it more.

That's the key to successful lifestyle change. I describe it here. If you can figure that out, the desire for the aforementioned junk will tend to go away.

It's a very simple concept that works. By the way, once you practice the concept, you can eat more. The eat less message is a myth.

Weight Watchers' B.S.

Sorry Weight Watchers, but many foods should be off limits. And, a sugar-ladened cupcake is at the top of my list.

If you approach diet, health and lifestyle properly, the desire for many over-the-top foods disappear.

As a side-note, if I desire a piece of cake, cupcake, donut, or ice-cream, I certainly could have one. It wouldn't derail my weight or health. However, those items have been replaced with equally delicious and much healthier foods.

Five Good Weight Loss Tips from a Doc

7/13/2011

Typically the tips you get from TV news aren't great. However, I agree with every tip in this segment. She mentions that Americans spend between $1 - $2-billion on weight loss each year. However, it's actually a mind-boggling $60-billion! And, with an estimated 95% failure rate, it's like throwing money out the window.

There are many ways to lose weight. However, this is not one of them.

I recommend reading Dr. David Katz's "review" of this "diet".

I Agree with . . .

J.J. Virgin, author of Six Weeks to Sleeveless and Sexy:

Surprisingly, there are a number of chemically based foods lurking all over your kitchen.  For starters, get rid of anything with the word diet in it.  Diet foods are mostly not food at all but chemistry experiments.  In order to take out the sugar or fat, more sugar or fat has to be added, depending on the promise of the food.  Foods that are nonfat are usually higher in sugar.  There are also heaps of chemicals thrown in to keep them semi-tasty.  Not only are these foods horrendous for your system (and stop you from losing weight as your body goes into shock mode to process these chemicals), but they’re not even satisfying.  Ever eat a diet “food” then crave the real thing before you’re even finished taking the last chalky bite?

Diets That Work!

I'm sure that this cover and title will help sell a lot of magazines. However, sorry to say, diets don't work. However, lifestyle changes do.

Unfortunately, American's spend $60-billion annually on diet-related products and have a 95% failure rate. By the way, this magazine will sell millions, but the dollar figure is not included in the above figure.

I wonder if this magazine used any airbrush techniques for this cover? LOL

*sa·ti·e·ty    (sə-tī'ĭ-tē)     n.  The condition of being full or gratified beyond the point of satisfaction

That's it. Once you figure out how to accomplish that, dieting is a piece of cake.

*It's explained in detail in Feed Your Head.

Extra, Extra . . . Eat More to Lose Weight

Yes, believe it or not, my saying is: Eat More, Exercise More. The trite saying: "Eat Less, Exercise More", is a myth. For longterm success, you must figure out what to eat and you certainly can eat more...I do.

Here's an article titled: Eat More to Lose Weight.

Don't Drink Your Calories

11/4/2009

A 20-ounce soft drink packs 250 calories, a 12-ounce mocha coffee drink has around 300, the average mixed drink has 300, and a glass of wine or beer about 150. Multiply that by a few servings and you can see how the extra calories can spell trouble for your weight-loss efforts.

Myth: If you exercise, you can eat whatever you want.

While exercise does burn calories, what and how much you eat still matters. For example, a one-mile walk burns about 100 calories — so you'd have to walk for 12 miles to burn off the typical 1,200-calorie fast-food meal of a hamburger, fries, and a soft drink!
