Hail to Kale

1/25/2012

Kale to the King of veggies. Lots of incredible benefits to eating Kale - hardly any calories, lots of fiber, and many other nutrients.

Here's a very easy recipe for enjoying Kale ... cut it up, toss with a little olive oil, and sprinkle a little salt on it. Now, roast it in the oven ... 400 degrees for about 10-minutes. I like them crispy.

So, instead of eating those unhealthy potato chips, try making your own Kale chips. I bought a head of Kale for $1.49.

Instead of trite sayings like: Eat Less, Exercise More or Eat More Fruits and Vegetables, how about getting creative. Here's one example ...

1 Red Pepper
1 Yellow Pepper
1 bag edamame (cook as directed)
2 Carrots
2 Celery Stalks

Red Wine Vinegar

Joy is a more powerful motivator than fear. - Dr. Dean Ornish

That astute observation was made by Dr. Ornish.

Think about it: Do people change their diet, health, and lifestyle behavior because they are told they are going to die? Typically, the answer is no. I have also learned that knowledge is not the solution.

Here's my bundle of joy. Yep, I want to be around a long time so I can enjoy my grandchildren. And hopefully, I'll be so fit that I will be able to play hoops with my great-grandchildren. As you can see, that's a long time from now.

I should have smiled, but he was sleeping on me for 2-hours.

Me and Paula Deen

1/16/2012

Paula Deen has announced that she has Type 2 Diabetes. When it comes to our health, we do have a choice. I chose to lose 30-pounds (the picture below is before the weight-loss) and gain better health. Paula Deen chose to create and eat over-the-top foods - high in fat, salt, and sugar.

Mrs. Deen still has a choice. If she makes a major change in her diet, she has the ability to reverse the disease. Of course, she would have to stop eating the food that she prepares on TV.

It would be great if she tossed the budda and created a show that presents healthy cooking. However, the rumors are floating around the Net that she will be a spokesperson for a Diabetes drug.

Here are some of the people who were the "stars" in the movie Forks Over Knives. These are detailed presentations about their areas of specialty. They're all fascinating presentations.

Start by watching Bill Maher's rant about Big-Pharma. It's incredibly funny.

Eat More, Lose Weight, Be Healthier

1/12/2012

Most experts will state: Eat Less, *Exercise More. I know first-hand and for many reasons, it's erroneous information. Here's one expert who will explain.

Here's a tech-tip. I watch a lot of videos. There's a tremendous amount of incredible expert information online and for free. However, I never watch these videos online. I download them to my iPhone (the greatest learning tool ever invented). Yes, there's an app for that. Here's an incredible app and it's free.

*Exercise is important. However, it's very difficult to "exercise off" the calories from a typical fast-food or average American restaurant meal.

The DASH Diet

The PR firm for the book The Dash Diet sent me a copy to read. Evidently, it was ranked Best Overall Diet by U.S. News and World Report. It "turned me off" pretty quickly when I read the back cover. It stated: ... no forbidden foods.

I get it: No one wants to be told to lay off the Snickers, M&M's, ice cream, Cheetos, and assorted other junk food treats. However, there are many foods that should not cross your lips.

Here's the important concept. When you get to page 116 of the book, it states: Choosing food that tastes great and is satisfying can help us eat less, while enjoying it more.

That's the key to successful lifestyle change. I describe it here. If you can figure that out, the desire for the aforementioned junk will tend to go away.

It's a very simple concept that works. By the way, once you practice the concept, you can eat more. The eat less message is a myth.

Lucky's Grim Reaper Burger

Lucky's, a burger joint near my home, is advertising this Reaper Burger. In my book, er menu, I rename it to the Grim Reaper Burger. I'm sure it's delicious, however, I am also sure it will wreak havoc for anyone wanting to live a healthy lifestyle.

As I've mentioned in the past, there's a study that states by 2030 50% of Americans will be obese. With food items like the Grim Reaper, no doubt, we are well on our way to 50%.

Here's an earlier post that I did in regard to a super-sized pizza parlor near my home.

On another note, unfortunately, Georgia ranks #2 in childhood obesity. As you may know Children's Healthcare of Atlanta has an "in-your-face" ad campaign to create awareness. No doubt, with tasty delights like the Grim Reaper, it has an up-hill battle.

No doubt, these items taste delicious. If you desire to lose weight and gain health, your challenge is to move away from these types of foods.

Can it be done? Absolutely. Do most people fail at it? Yes.

I have developed one concept and two words that will move you away from these foods that make you fat and unhealthy.

Weight Watchers' B.S.

Sorry Weight Watchers, but many foods should be off limits. And, a sugar-ladened cupcake is at the top of my list.

If you approach diet, health and lifestyle properly, the desire for many over-the-top foods disappear.

As a side-note, if I desire a piece of cake, cupcake, donut, or ice-cream, I certainly could have one. It wouldn't derail my weight or health. However, those items have been replaced with equally delicious and much healthier foods.
