If you're a brave soul, take a look at the food our kids are eating at school.
My recommendation: Pack it. Here's a simple product that will assist - Easy Lunch Boxes.
*That's only one issue. There are many other forces at work.
Many people attribute childhood obesity* to the crap that is being served at school. Well, here's one teacher who is fed up with school lunches and is blogging about it. She is eating the lunches, taking pictures, and discussing each lunch.

Here's a fascinating story how osteopenia became a "disease". An alternative to drugs . . . here it is. You can make all the excuses you want and rationalize "until the cows come home", but if you give change a chance, you will find that this quote is very true.
Good habits are as addictive as bad habits, and a lot more rewarding. - Harvey MacKay I have a lot of incredible quotes in my book, but this is the most memorable. If French fries were fat free, what a wonderful world this would be. - Alan Jackson
Willie Mays has a new biography. It's a great book and here's a great interview with Charlie Rose. If you want to read about one of the greatest baseball players ever, click here. From the New York Times; a great video about serving sizes. Bottomline: Read the label carefully.
Two very knowledgeable people are interviewed by Katie Couric. From this session, here's the most dramatic statistic: In 1960 the average woman aged 20 - 29 weighed 127 pounds. By 2000, that number skyrocketed to 157 pounds. A whopping 95% of people who lose weight gain it all back. If you'd like to know the reason, here it is . . .
Dr. Rudolph L. Leibel, who is with Columbia University, explains. During his presentation he describes the people most likely to maintain weight loss. I agree 100% with his explanation. Where have all the farms and farmers gone? An interesting look into the past 50 years. Here's the answer.
Kelly Brownell the director of Yale's Rudd Obesity Center interviews Rudolph L. Leibel, MD (Christopher J. Murphy Memorial Professor of Diabetes Research; Co-Director, Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center; Head, Division of Molecular Genetics; Columbia University) about The Genetics of Body Weight. I think you will find it fascinating. Dr. Christina Economos discusses health, diet, nutrition, and for me, the most important aspect of her presentation...the importance of strength/weight training. For all the benefits, I recommend clicking on "Watch Full Program". While I do not agree with some of his predictions - an obese 16 year-old will be dead by age 22 - he does touch on some of the problems and issues with food in American society. I'm lovin' it!
I'm happy to say that Forbes has many of my radio interviews and articles posted at its site. Check it out . . . here. Katie Couric and CBS did a special about this problem area at our factory farms and food supply. It's a two part series. If you'd like to learn more about the fascinating story behind antibiotics in our food supply, watch this video. A wise man, my father-in-law, has always told me that placebos work. Listen to this fellow chat about it. He's the doctor behind badscience.net. The Center for Consumer Freedom is an "attack dog" organization that is against most, maybe all, efforts to assist with changing food policy. It is all about representing fast food, sugar, soda, and other food-related industries.
The organization actually has dossiers on people who are trying to change food policy. While I disagree with much of what it stands for, the cartoons at its site are very funny. It's very nice that Mrs. Obama has Tiki Barber, an NFL star, on her team. However, here's the reality of the NFL and food. Take a peek. It ain't pretty. Here's a PSA with Drew Brees and President Obama. However, take a look at the picture below the PSA. That's the reality. Mrs. Obama's initiative to end childhood obesity is noble. However, it's taking a systems approach...change ingrained institutions. They will be difficult, if not impossible, to change.
It would be much easier to focus on the individual. Try to change individual behavior. 1. Don't drink Coke, Pepsi or any other sugar water. And, definitely do not drink those "healthy" fruit juices. They're full of sugar.
2. Stop eating all that fast-food. 3. Eat less meat. She cannot say the above because these are big businesses with deep pockets (code for lobbyists) and the federal government (USDA) promotes beef. Click here, to purchase Feed Your Head. While I give Mrs. Obama credit for shedding light on the nation's diet, health, and obesity problem, she is addressing only half the problem. Her attention is on kids.
Actually, it might "take a village", but at a minimum, the entire family must be involved. I wish her well. Unfortunately, I think the NFL, Terry Bradshaw, Charles Barkley and many other stars who peddle junk food will prevail. Let's check back in three years and see how it's going. While the study isn't the last word on whether tea-drinking is good for you, tea is generally harmless and has no calories, so if you like the taste, most researchers would probably say go ahead and drink it.
"The point is, if you're drinking green tea, that's fine. It's premature to recommend that somebody start drinking" it to protect their health, Lichtenstein said. Source: USA Today Good habits are as addictive as bad habits, and a lot more rewarding. - Harvey MacKay
Here's the kicker . . . it's true. At a whopping 720 calories and 32 teaspoons of sugar, when it comes to junk food, it is the leader of the pack. Of course, that's until I identify one worse than this baby.
By the way, take a look at Trans Fat. The label says 0. Guess what. That's a lie. If you look over to the ingredients, you will see partially hydrogenated soybean oil. Yep, that's trans fat. Sadly, food manufacturers are allowed to say 0 if the grams are less than .50. How safe are genetically modified organisms (our food supply)? In the United States, we are not very concerned. However, in Europe, they are very concerned. Here's a movie about it. You decide. |
