                      Quinoa - Pronounced Keenwah 07/07/2011

As a healthy eater, I'm always "hunting and gathering" new foods to eat. I "discovered" quinoa about a year ago. In a word, it's delicious. It's easy to prepare (takes about 15-minutes cooking time) and will take on the flavor of anything you throw in it.

This version has: black beans, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, peppers (spicy, red, and green), artichokes, and onions. I also added cumin and cayenne pepper. It's a modified version from Allrecipes.

It's high in protein and fiber. And by adding all these other veggies and beans, it's a health-sensation! So, if you've never tried quinoa, go for it!

Oh yeah, since it's so filling, it can be a meal (I have it for lunch) or a side dish.

One more side benefit: One package makes a tremendous amount. So, put it in the refrigerator and warm it up in the microwave (about 45-seconds).

Cost: Frequently, I am told that healthy eating is expensive. The ingredients for this cost about $9.00. If I were to have this for lunch, this would serve about 5 meals. That's about $1.80/meal. Yep, that beats out a fast food junk meal.

The Eat This, Not That people have created a wonderful book franchise. However, the alternative choices it offers are usually pretty bad.

Here's one example: The Worst Beverages in the Supermarket (you're kidding - you're going to recommend a product that has 320 calories and 42 grams of sugar - that's 11 teaspoons of sugar)

                      Here's a much better alternative . . . plain ole Diet Coke.

                      Salmon . . . A Complex Story 03/04/2010

You've been told (over and over again) to eat Salmon. It's got lots of Omega-3 - good for the heart.

Well, the story of *farmed Salmon is not a heart-warming one. I recommend watching these videos for the details.

Once you delve into the American food system, you begin to learn, there's a lot to the story. Much of our farmed Salmon comes from Norway. Here's how the story
                      unfolds . . .

*I've been told that the only Salmon that cannot be farmed is Sockeye Salmon. You might want to eat Sockeye as opposed to farmed Salmon.

                      What's for Lunch . . . at School? 02/24/2010

Many people attribute childhood obesity* to the crap that is being served at school. Well, here's one teacher who is fed up with school lunches and is blogging about it. She is eating the lunches, taking pictures, and discussing each lunch.

If you're a brave soul, take a look at the food our kids are eating at school.

My recommendation: Pack it. Here's a simple product that will assist - Easy Lunch Boxes.

*That's only one issue. There are many other forces at work.

While I do not agree with some of his predictions - an obese 16 year-old will be dead by age 22 - he does touch on some of the problems and issues with food in American society.

How safe are genetically modified organisms (our food supply)? In the United States, we are not very concerned. However, in Europe, they are very concerned. Here's a movie about it. You decide.

The Eat This, Not That folks have done two things exceptionally well:

                      1. As a publisher of a successful book series, I admire their series and marketing prowess to make it happen.

                      2. The Not That component of the equation is very good. However, the Eat This piece typically needs improvement. Here are some examples related to a recent recommendation.

                      a. Best Cereal
                      Eat This, Not That Choice:
                      Post Shredded Wheat

                      Feed Your Head Choice:
Fiber One (has less sugar, fewer calories, and more fiber)

                      b. Best Breakfast Bar
                      Eat This, Not That Choice:
South Beach Living High Protein Peanut Butter Cereal Bar

                      Feed Your Head Choice:
For breakfast, I wouldn't recommend a bar. However, a better choice would be Pure Protein Bar (double the protein)

                      c. Best Tortilla
                      Eat This, Not That Choice:
                      MexAmerica 100% Whole Wheat Flour

                      Feed Your Head Choice:
Either the La Tortilla Factory or the Trader Joe's brand (fewer calories and more fiber)

That's just a sampling. Happy and healthy eating.
