Typically, I stay away from discussing factory farms. However, I believe if we saw how chickens, cows, pigs, and even farm-raised salmon were raised, we would be appalled. The video below is from a factory farm. It's unfortunate that we have "progressed" to this.

While this video is horrific, we should not pretend that it does not exist. It reminds me of the famous Jack Nicholson line in A Few Good Men: "You can't handle the truth!" Of course, it goes on with a magnificent rant.

If you can handle the truth, proceed ...

And, hot off the press, this article Doctors Take Aim At Antibiotic Resistance From Factory Farming. Almost 80% of the antibiotics used in the U.S. go to factory farm animals - to keep them disease-free and to plump them up quicker.

Because our factory farm animals are bred to grow quicker, fatter, produce more food (milk), and are contained in an unhealthy environment, they are given a tremendous amount of antibiotics.

Upwards of 70% of the antibiotics used in the U.S. go toward farm animals. Here's an interesting piece in the New York Times.

Each year, federal inspectors find illegal levels of antibiotics in hundreds of older dairy cows bound for the slaughterhouse. Concerned that those antibiotics might also be contaminating the milk Americans drink, the Food and Drug Administration intended to begin tests this month on the milk from farms that had repeatedly sold cows tainted by drug residue. Moral of the story: Purchase organic milk. Unfortunately, organic milk is very expensive, but considering the alternative, it might be worth it.

By the way,  the story behind the origin of antibiotics in our food supply is fascinating. Here it is.

In the olden days, prior to the use of antibiotics, a chicken looked like the one on the left. Today's chicken is fed a "healthy" dose of antibiotics and looks like the feller on the right. By they way, today's chicken cannot walk.

Katie Couric and CBS did a special about this problem area at our factory farms and food supply. It's a two part series.
