For more than 20 years, the Dartmouth Atlas Project has documented glaring variations (in other words, depending on where you live, you will receive more or less medical care) in how medical resources are distributed and used in the United States. The project uses Medicare data to provide information and analysis about national, regional, and local markets, as well as hospitals and their affiliated physicians. This research has helped policymakers, the media, health care analysts and others improve their understanding of our health care system and forms the foundation for many of the ongoing efforts to improve health and health systems across America. Below, Dr. Gilbert Welch interviews Dr. Jack Wennberg. Dr. Wennberg has been conducting this research for over forty years.

Dr, Caldwell Esselstyn - Author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease
Today I read this by a doc:
My medical school years taught me a lot. The major areas of treatment in medicine, surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics and psychiatry were all covered in specific detail. What wasn't covered so well was how to help patients avoid treatment in these areas. He goes on to tell the reader the knowledge that is needed. It's, so simple. While each component is fascinating, take note of how much we spend on health care. It's even higher than I thought (check this post out about cost/benefit of health care expenditures). Of course, when he gets to defense spending, it becomes apparent we can cut out some of the fat. There are many myths we believe about heart health. Take a moment to listen to these two well-respected doctors. Guaranteed you will "walk" away with a new perspective. The People's Pharmacy interviewed Dr. Steve Nissen of the Cleveland Clinic and author of Heart 411: The Only Guide to Heart Health You'll Ever Need. Surprising, but true: More women now die of heart disease than men, yet cardiovascular research has long focused on men. Pioneering doctor C. Noel Bairey Merz shares what we know and don't know about women's heart health -- including the remarkably different symptoms women present during a heart attack (and why they're often missed). |
